The Licence 3
The year’s organisation
- Fifth semester – teaching coordination: Mathieu Berteloot
The S5 studio continues an initiation to urban project at a urban dimension of the architectural project. It allows to articulate the comprehension of urban shapes with different scales of living, from the city to the apartment. Multiple notions are also seen with those different scales, from public space to public to private grading, through density and the “living together”.
This semester clearly states a doctrine at the opposite of the tabula rasa. It is about exploring ways in order to support architecture in its physical, historical and symbolic characteristics in a sedimentation logic of it, through a reflexion of scale and density.
Understanding, competence and attitude goals:
– Tackle survey methods at city or architectural scales.
– Acquire urban scale representation tools, without fail in drawing and scale models
– Acquire knowledge by developing the way of looking (public-private, density, typologies, urban morphology…)
– Tackle a contemporary project in relation with precise characteristics of a places identity and studied fabric.
- Semester 6 – teaching coordination: Franck Salama, Didier Debarge
At the end of the third year and of the licence cycle, the sixth semester leads students in showing what they have learnt in a syntheses project with a task on different scales and mixed programs. In this semester, each teacher duo leads his subject his way. There for, diversity and nuances brought to the apprehension of a same situation contributes to give to this semester a taste of what is to come in the master’s degree.
Licence report: preparation to research and human and social science
The other big part of the sixth semester resides in the preparation and defence of the report having to be about all of the licence cycle, prepared under the responsibility of a practicing architect (of HCA urban Architectural History and Culture) and of an anthropologist (Gilles Maury and Céline Barrère). This preparation expects on the master’s cycle by giving students certain methodological tools in research, writing, presentation and expression. As a fact, what has been observed all along the architectural course on generalised lacks, around writing and enunciation of a personal thought, is unanimous. This helps to reinforce the practice of writing according to the advanced teaching norms, in a formula that still needs to be invented, but that would look for, semester after semester, establish an increase in this domain, at the same time as what is been done in studios.
In this objective, directed exercises ( UE “ presentation/ representation”) have for objective to constitutes a first approach, simple and targeted, of what could be architectural research, and get prepared to master’s seminars. These exercises are the occasion is to cross information and do research on different medium, the result being the summary around a specific subject. They are destined to all the third year students, of the sixth semester, every other week.
As part of the licence report presentation, the UE “presentation/ representation” closes a continuous series of classes in human and society science, threw sociology, anthropology, philosophy, urban and human geography, architecture history, ideas, of cities and objects, semiology (discussion logic). In addition of capacity to converse and writing aptitudes, to reflexion, interpretation up to the master’s cycle, the result of these classes is also destined to better understand social, economic and cultural contexts to which all architecture are bound to.
